Masters Application Deadline is Extended to 31 July 2009

Many people have informed me that they need more time to complete their application because they are still on an internship or finishing their bachelor thesis. I spoke with the fellow members of the Admissions Board and we have decided to extend the application deadline.

If you live outside of the EU and need a visa, the deadline to apply to our one-year full-time MA and MSc in Utrecht is 31 July 2009. Our full-time masters start on 21 September 2009.

Receiving your application before the deadline gives us enough time to:

go through the admissions procedure with you;

apply for a visa for you;

assist you with finding accommodation in Utrecht.

If you live in the EU or come from a country for which you only need to apply for a residence permit to study in The Netherlands (ie Canada, USA, Australia), the deadline is also 31 July 2009. Should there still be places open on the MA and MSc programmes after that date, we will accept applications on a rolling basis.

Non-Dutch applicants need to realise that there is a limited number of housing opportunities in Utrecht. The sooner we receive your application, the more chance we have to find accommodation for you.

Masters Admissions Criteria Announced for 2009-2010 Academic Year

Each year fellow members of the Masters Admissions Board and I review the admissions criteria and procedure to see if we would like to make any changes to improve the quality of our services or the quality of the incoming students.

Do You still Have Time to Apply to a TiasNimbas Master?

This week several people have been asking whether they can still apply to our MA and MSc programmes. There are still some places available.

We would need to receive your application as soon as possible, especially if you need a visa in order to study in The Netherlands.

The Dutch government takes up to 6 weeks to process a visa application and we would need to complete your application quickly so that you don't miss the start of the master programme on 17 September.

Please contact me, if you want to apply and if you are not sure whether or not you would need a visa.

Is an English Test Necessary for Admission to the Master Programmes?

A question that comes up in admissions discussions is whether or not a TOEFL or IELTS is necessary to be admitted to the MA and MSc programmes.

If English is your first language or if your entire bachelor degree was conducted in the English language, we will exempt you from taking the TOEFL or IELTS.

Who Should You Include as a Referee?

We suggest that your referee is someone who knows your academic qualifications, like a professor or guidance counsellor.

Or you could include someone who has worked with you, like a boss from an internship.

These people can give us more insight into your performance, qualifications and motivation.

Do You Need to Include a Reference Letter with Your Application?

We only require you to include the complete details of 2 referees (page 3 of the application form). You are, however, welcome to include reference letters as they provide us with more information about you. We generally contact referees only when we need to gain more insight into your qualifications.

Do You Need a GMAT to Apply to a Master Programme?

A GMAT may not be necessary  to be accepted to our master programmes.

We do need to assess whether you are capable of the academic level of our programmes and, therefore, would need to receive your application package first to determine your qualifications.

We will especially take a look at your transcript to see what kind of subjects you studied during your bachelor and the marks you received.

If, for example, you have had subjects like economics and statistics and have done well in them, we may exempt you from the GMAT.

Do We Accept Bachelor Degrees from a University of Applied Sciences?

I often get the question whether we take applications into consideration if the bachelor degree is from a University of Applied Sciences (ie. Hogeschool in The Netherlands, Fachhochschule in Germany).

While students with a bachelor degree from an academic-based university are expected to already be at the academic level appropriate for our master programmes, we do accept applications from students from Universities of Applied Sciences.

These applications are reviewed on a case by case basis as we take the individual's entire application package into consideration (bachelor subjects studied and marks received, experiences, test results and motivation to do the master programme).

Should You Wait to Apply for Your Master Until After You Receive Your Bachelor Diploma?

Another question I often hear is whether or not someone should wait until they receive their bachelor diploma before sending a master application to TiasNimbas.

This is not necessary.

If you know you will graduate before the start of our master programme in Utrecht, you can first send in your application package with a transcript of the subjects studied and the marks received.

We will start the admissions procedure with you and, if accepted, you can send us a copy of your diploma upon graduation.
